Gluten-Free Travelling

Many don’t realize the difficulty in travelling with a food allergy, such as that to wheat. Who knows what is actually in that dish? Set your mind, and your taste buds, at ease— here is a helpful short list of restaurants from around the world that are not only gluten-free, but delicious and filling. For more, ask your concierge on arrival.

London’s Cotto
Cotto’s owner is actually a Celiac (gluten allergic) himself, so he spends a lot of creative energy developing the most delicious gluten-free options available. Their spaghetti carbonara is superb, but get to supper early, as it sells out quickly.

New York City’s Babycakes
Pamper your neglected sweet tooth with this vegan and gluten-free bakery and sweet shoppe. Cookies, cakes, loaves, muffins, and other treats are just waiting to be tasted. While you’re there, pick up their newly released cookbook to try at home.

Paris’ Des Si & Des Mets
Before Des Si & Des Mets, Paris was notoriously tough on celiacs, with breads being a mainstay of French cuisine. However, this lovely restaurant is the city’s first entirely gluten-free restaurant. For a rich and satisfying dish, try the herbed guinea hen over olive polenta.

Buenos Aires’ Cabana Las Lilas
Buenos Aires is a veritable buffet for the gluten-free set, with Argentine beef and steaks highlighting most menus. And Cabana Las Lilas rises to the top. Although they don’t feature a separate Celiac menu, very little of their dishes actually contain gluten. Go for an ojo de bife (ribeye) steak, with sides of garlic-sauteed mushrooms and red peppers.

London Nightlife: Where to Go

Sketch Gallery
Sketch Gallery’s minimalist dining room is a private art gallery by day, a restaurant in the evening, then a DJ club after 11pm. The first floor Lecture Room is the most expensive restaurant in London— the consulting master chef is none other than Pierre Gagnaire.

While dining, the toilets must be visited more than once. That’s all we’ll say.

Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes

Rock ‘n’ Roll bowling at its finest. Featuring inexpensive lane rentals, unexpectedly upscale drinks, rare high-alcohol beers, retro-chic ambiance and…karaoke. Try to get there early, as Bloomsbury Bowl is a night all unto itself.

Check out this West End tiki-themed lounge for a bit of celebrity hobnobbing. Although definitely upscale and a bit pricey, Mahiki is known for treating all guests as royalty. The bar showcases organic cocktails with a tropical twist, while the dance floor jumps to cheeky pop hits.

BFI Imax
For a glamorous (but not quite so tipsy) night in London, head over to the U.K.’s largest screen, the BFI Imax Theatre in South Bank. In addition to the traditional Imax flicks such as, “Dinosaurs 3D: Giants of Patagonia,” popular movies such as “Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix” are shown.
