Rome in Films

Few cities have so eternally captured the imagination of filmmakers as Rome. History, romance, drama— whatever your tastes, this city sets the scene. Explore the sites with these films as your guide.

“Gladiator”
Ancient Roman history makes for rich film fodder in “Gladiator”. The film, loosely based on real events, provocatively captures the majesty of the Colosseum, and will transport you to the human drama that once played out in the crumbling stones around you.

“The Agony and The Ecstasy”
Though technically a sovereign state, a visit to Rome would be amiss without a visit to Vatican City and the Sistine Chapel. As you gaze up at the masterpiece of Renaissance art, be reminded of the politics and intrigue that guided the artist’s hand in the 1965 classic “The Agony and the Ecstasy”.

A wish for true love, a wish to return to the Eternal City— the Trevi Fountain grants your wish for a beautiful respite in a bustling city. And as tempting as it might be to re-enact the famous scene from Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita,” it is probably better to just drop a coin into the water instead.

After a busy day of site-seeing, find your way to the Spanish steps, a la Audrey Hepburn in “Roman Holiday” and savor the sweet perfection of Italian gelato. That is one scene any traveller to Rome would be happy to recreate again and again.

Classic Movie Locations

Do you ever wonder where your favourite films were shot? Perhaps you’ve walked right past one!

Here are a few that are not to be missed:

Breakfast At Tiffanys, New York City, United States
Any New York resident could point you toward the famous Tiffanys jewelry store on 57th Street and Fifth Avenue, but did you know that Holly Golightly’s apartment is located at 169 East 71st Street?

The Sound of Music, Salzberg, Austria
Although there are Sound of Music locales all around Salzberg, Austria, the most intimate is the gazebo in which Liesl and Rolfe first meet, and sing the duet “Sixteen Going on Seventeen.”

Bullitt, San Fransisco, United States
Although the famous car chase scene in the American classic, Bullitt is located throughout San Francisco, the height of the excitement takes place on Fillmore Street, between Broadway and Vallejo Street. We’re also proud to say that the lobby of our very own Mark Hopkins Hotel, home of the InterContinental San Francisco, was a part of that film also.

Last Tango in Paris , Paris, France
Between the 15th and 16th arrondissements of the Pont de Bir-Hakeim in Paris, you’ll find the spot where Paul (Marlon Brando) meets Jeanne (Maria Schneider).
